TTC Tokens from 1954 & 2012 on Flickr.
Via Flickr:
I found a couple of TTC tokens in an antique store dating back to 1954, which was when the Toronto Transit Commission officially began operating. They are featured on the bottom; the year is imprinted above the crest on the left. I’ve placed tokens from 2012 above them, though the year is no longer imprinted.
Compared to today’s tokens the older ones felt lighter which gave it a less durable feeling compared to the new bi-metal ones. They came in a “token dispenser” the previous owner used back in the old days. It was actually just a small metal tube you could travel with that was intended to dispense dimes but worked for the tokens since they were of the same size.
